Hi-ro Shino

In traditional shino, the orange or red flashing that can break through the otherwise white glaze and plae clay body is called “Hi-ro” which directly translates to “fire color”. On this shino pot in particular, the fire color is pronounced, going from a bold red orange in parts to a more subdued orange that’s almost peach-toned on other parts of the pot. The pot itself is made from a grogged porcelain with an iron wash applied beneath a traditional shino glaze. I fired this pot to Cone 10 in reduction in our Blaauw kiln.
