Ash-glazed Chawan

This chawan was thrown from a commercial clay body to which we added sawdust, feldspar chunks, coarse sand, and mica chunks. The roughness of the clay certainly influenced the roughness of the form, but, more importantly, created a surface texture with lots of features for the ash glaze to flow over and around. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this pot is that the ash glazed flowed and pooled into its deep chadamari at the bottom of the bowl, creating a clear blue puddle with crystals growing in it that resembles clear ocean.
